FARMERS MARKET REVIEW:
Tarrytown & Sleepy Hollow Farmers Market - The TaSH
For the first farmers market review, I visited the TaSH Farmers Market in Tarrytown and Sleepy Hollow. This market runs almost all year round, operating weekly on Saturday mornings from spring through fall, with a winter indoor market running from November through March. It is located on Broadway in Patriots Park for the Summer, Fall, and Spring, near Sleepy Hollow High School. For the winter, it is inside the gymnasium of John Paulding School. When carrying out this review, I took into account six factors of an ideal farmers market: variety of food options, size of market, seating available, freshness of products, "vibes," and pricing.
Variety of Food Options: 10/10
This market is one of the few in Westchester County where I have found a great balance of hot food, pastries, fresh produce, drinks, and more. There are more than 50 vendors, serving anything from croissants to pumpkins to paella.
Size of Market: 9/10
This market is large, as it nearly encompasses the entire perimeter of Patriots Park, with vendors on both sides of the sidewalk. The only reason it did not receive a perfect score in this category is that the winter market inside the school gym can be quite small with limited options.
Seating Available: 6/10
Not bad, but not great. Like many farmers markets, there is limited seating available for eating food purchased at the market. There are a few benches with tables in the center of the park, but you will most likely be walking with your food. However, since it is in a large park, you can sit on the grass or on the stone walls, so it is not impossible to sit.
Freshness of Products: 10/10
All produce is visibly fresh and sourced directly from local farms within a 50-mile radius. Vendors enthusiastically share information about their growing practices, and the quality is noticeably superior to supermarket alternatives.
"Vibes": 8/10
This market is lively with live music, friendly vendors, a beautiful park to enjoy, and a playground for children. The winter market is not as exciting, but I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt.
Pricing: 7/10
The prices at this market can be high, but are not drastically different from its counterparts. Be prepared to pay New York City prices, but at least they are for local, fresh products.
Overall: 9/10
The TaSH is a top-three farmers market in Westchester. I highly recommend it for families and food enthusiasts seeking variety, high quality, and direct access to local businesses.
Until next week at … the Bronxville Farmers Market!
