Will Paul Feiner's Tenure as Greenburgh Town Supervisor End on June 23?
On June 23, Edgemont (and Greenburgh) Democrats will head to the polls for a primary that has been a long time coming. Incumbent Town Supervisor Paul Feiner, who has held the position since 1991, faces challenger Barry McGoey, a Village of Ardsley Trustee and attorney. For Edgemont residents in particular, the stakes feel personal, again.
The tension between Edgemont and Feiner stretches back nearly a decade, rooted in our community's many attempts to incorporate as a separate village, efforts that Feiner has blocked numerous times. A state Supreme Court justice ruled in March that Feiner had wrongly rejected the most recent incorporation petition, the third time in nine years a judge has ordered a vote after Feiner ruled the petitions legally insufficient.
Feiner has justified his opposition by arguing that Edgemont's incorporation could cost the town upward of $17 million in annual tax revenue, something that critics say explains his motive more than his legal reasoning.
The history goes further than courtrooms. During an earlier incorporation push, the town's lawyer admitted to hiring private investigators who approached Edgemont residents who had signed the incorporation petition and tricked some into signing objections to it. This created widespread outrage and calls for an independent investigation. McGoey, while not taking a formal position on incorporation itself, has called Edgemont's fight part of Feiner's 34-year tenure, saying, "people feel unheard."
For Edgemont, the June 23 primary is less about party politics and more about having another chance to be heard. Early voting begins June 13 and runs through June 21, with the primary itself on June 23. Whether or not McGoey wins, the fact that Feiner is facing his most serious challenge in years signals that the long-running frustration in communities like Edgemont is still here. However, oftentimes, voters vote with the candidate they are most familiar with, and for Feiner, that would be ideal.
We will have to see by June 23 if Feiner's tenure continues or if he will be "dethroned" by McGoey, promising change.
